I’m a lover of all things medieval. I enjoy attending the local Renaissance Festival, watching shows like Game of Thrones, Merlin, and Reign. I’ve even drugged my family along for dinner at Medieval Times a few summer vacations back. So when I heard about an Indianapolis woman who fought off an intruder with a sword I was a bit tickled, and relieved that things ended well.
Karen Dolley, 43, awoke to the sound of a man’s voice shortly after midnight Thursday. My first thought was, if this man was alone, who exactly was he talking to?
The intruder obviously picked the wrong house to break into because Dolley is well-trained in medieval combat. She was completely caught off guard and struck the burglar 10 times before she went for her gun. She looked in the wrong drawer and came up empty so she grabbed her sword, a ninjato, and held the guy there until the police arrived.
The remorseful burglar actually apologized to Dolley as he was being ushered out by the police.
Dolley learned the medieval combat skills when she turned 18 thanks to the Society for Creative Anachronism which recreates skills and arts from Europe pre-17th century. She became very accustomed to wearing heavy armor and became an expert in Japanese Rattan Swords.
I applaud Dolley for having the skills and knowledge to protect herself. She channeled her inner ninja and the only injury she received were sore knuckles. Things could have ended much differently had she relied on a third-party to show up to protect her.
However, I would not recommend someone without proper training try to fight an intruder. Your very best bet is to get out if you can. Have a plan in place just for this kind of scenario.
What do you think about the way Dolley handled the situation?
