The Disgruntled Employee

 

According to a New York Times Gallup poll, a whooping 7 out of 10 people hate their job. That statistic shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone because there’s a very good chance that you are one of those 7 people. If you’re not, then consider yourself blessed to have a job that you enjoy…or are self-employed.

Yesterday, TV journalists 24-year-old Alison Parker and 27-year-old Adam Ward, were killed live on air by a disgruntled employee. A third person, Vicki Gardner, was also injured but survived. Although Vester Flanagan no longer worked for the TV station, he apparently was having a hard time moving on with his life. He committed suicide just a few hours after the shooting.

 

According to this article from MSN, he claimed to had filed a complaint regarding some racially charged comments from other employees. It also states that he was inspired by the Charleston Church shooting that happened on June 17th.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing anyone can do about the lives lost except to keep the victim’s loved ones in thoughts and prayers. But I do have a few common sense tips if your job requires you to work with/around others.

If you hate your job, get a new one.

I know this sounds a bit too easy, especially when good paying jobs don’t always come a dime a dozen. I understand there are many variables for each individual. I’m not insinuating that changing jobs is an easy thing to do. It may be impossible to make a quick exit, but that doesn’t mean you should give up and be contempt being unhappy.

On the flip side, I’ve frequented several low wage establishments where the employee gets upset with the customer because they hate their job and then take it out on others. For example, one day I was at a drive thru and ordered some food. After paying for the food I was told by the cashier to “please pull forward, we will bring your food out.” I don’t have a problem pulling forward and waiting a few extra minutes, but I always ask for my condiments before doing so because 9 times out of 10 they will forget to put them in the bag. Well, this was too difficult for the cashier who proceeded to give me 1 sauce and an attitude (there were 4 orders of nuggets). I kindly asked for my money back and went somewhere else.

Start your own business.

Another not-so-simple solution, it takes planning and dedication but is definitely well worth your sanity and happiness. I’m not going to outline how to start a business, there are many resources online, at bookstores and your local library to help get you started. But if you’re miserable every single day, why not give it a shot? It’s better than being a disgruntled employee.

Treat others kindly and with respect.

Managers, employees, customers, etc should always be kind to others, even when you don’t feel like it. You never know what your unkind words, harsh treatment or belittling jokes will do to the psyche of another person. When you are disrespectful to others you are asking for the same treatment in return, and will sometimes receive worst. Oftentimes, people who had nothing to do with the mistreatment will get caught in the crossfire. Practice being kind and you’ll be amazed at the results.
