Q. My girlfriend has been working as an assistant to a very wealthy entrepreneur for about 8 months now. She really loves what she does but is miserable most of the time because the guy she works for is a selfish, mean-spirited @$$hole.
Sometimes she will vent to me about how he treats her and it pisses me off. When I tell her I’m going to have words with him, she begs me not to because I could ruin her career. She won’t quite working for him either because she thinks [mistreatment] just comes with the job.
Just yesterday, he yelled at her because a document he needed was not in his briefcase when he went to a so-called important meeting. He forgot to tell her about the document beforehand yet he’s screaming at her as if she was supposed to already know this.
I’m half-tempted to go down to his office and beat this guy’s @$$. Talk me out of it before I go to jail.
A. You definitely don’t want to go start an altercation with her boss because either way it will not end well. Not only will you find yourself in jail (that’s if he doesn’t hurt or kill you first), but your girlfriend will either still be working for him or for someone else who’s equally abusive.
You have to admit, there are some job where you must have thick skin in order to survive. That doesn’t mean that verbal abuse is OK, it just means that there will always be those who are willing to endure it for whatever benefit they may get out it, mainly to further their career.
Here’s what you should do:
Tell your girlfriend that you won’t confront her boss if she promises not to vent to you anymore about his verbal abuse. Let her know that this is the only way you will be able to control the urge to protect her from his unfair treatment.
Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have her record their daily interactions with a hidden camera just in case he crosses that fine line. This way, she will have proof in court. But she needs to be ready to explain exactly why she continued working for him knowing that he has a short fuse.
You should also make sure she is carrying pepper spray just in case as well.
So whatever you decide to do, stay out of trouble and stay out of jail. Good luck!
