Armed Robber Shot By Conceal Carry License Holder

An armed robber is dead after a conceal carry licensee shot him in Chicago on Sunday, November 1st. This took place while he was robbing a store with a weapon.

Now, I can’t help but think that this is almost unbelievable.

Not because the armed criminal was killed, but because someone was actually carrying legally in Chicago.

It ain’t no secret that Chicago is riddled with crime and violence and is among one of the most dangerous cities to live in in America.

The fact that this 55-year-old conceal carrier was aware of this fact, and made the conscious decision to take control of his own personal safety is remarkable. Thankfully, no one else was hurt during this ordeal.

The robber was also a 55-year old man. Reginald Gildersleev had an extensive rap sheet and this was definitely not his first rodeo.

It’s unfortunate that this was his path in life.

In a perfect world, none of us would need to protect our lives and livelihood. But we don’t live in that perfect world. Not yet.

Take a moment and think about what you would do in that situation. Would you pray and hope that the bad guy doesn’t pull the trigger? Would you hope s/he only wants the money and would soon flee after receiving such? Are you trusting police to arrive in time to save you from such a deranged lunatic?

Now take it one step further and think about being in this situation with someone you love dearly, more than life itself. A child, spouse, parent, friend, etc. To what extent would you go to preserve their life in a similar situation? Are you prepared to do so?

Not everyone is comfortable with firearms and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I completely understand.

BUT…

What is your personal safety plan? Do you have what it takes to survive a potentially violent situation? How do you protect your loved ones?

  1. Oh my! Really makes you think, doesn’t it. These are all valid questions and ones I actually don’t know how to answer. It’s good to be prepared, and I’m terrified of guns. This one requires a lot of thought… although I do know without a doubt I’d give my life to save my loved ones, as I think we all would.

    1. I use to be terrified of guns so I totally get it. There are many other self-defense options available such as self-defense classes and both lethal and no-lethal products. A key chain pepper spray just might come in real handy some day!

  2. This is great food for thought. I am not sure where I stand about guns to be honest, but situations like these make you consider it. Most importantly though, I am assuming the owner knew how to handle a gun which is what some people overlook when they think of obtaining one.

    1. Right Nena. Guns are definitely nothing to play with and there are certain responsibilities that gun owners need to take on such as knowing how and when to use one. Otherwise, you unnecessarily put others at risk for serious injury or death.

  3. Well written post Tasha. It is so important to know how to protect yourself, how to do it responsibly, and when able to do so others are then also protected. I really appreciate your knowledge and courage to put these stories out there for us to consider. Carrie, A Mother’s Shadow

  4. I used to be afraid of my children being stolen…now, well its not a nice world and all I can do is hope for the best….I don’t own a gun, I have often thought I should carry a bat in my car or RV, my husband says why invite trouble….hummmmm kat
