What To Do About Irrational Fears

As unbelievable as it may sound, almost everyone has some kind of irrational fear. The strongest man can be afraid of the smallest spider and the bravest woman might get weak in the knees while standing on a high platform. But despite this shared connection between people, some fears can become so severe that they literally control a person’s way of life. If you’ve discovered that your irrational fears are decreasing your quality of living then now is the time to act.

Face the Fear

It’s a term you’ve probably heard a million times and it remains one of the most powerful ways to overcome the problem. Being exposed to your fear will develop confidence, but you are going to have to be patient in order to succeed. Start small and work your way to more challenging scenarios. For example, if you have a fear of snakes then look at a few pictures and imagine what it would be like to stand next to one. However, don’t focus on the fear. Instead, pay attention to the control you have. From there you can take it a little further, but remember to keep the steps small. If you have a friend or family member that can stand by in support then use them, because with every bit of confidence you build up you’ll realize the world isn’t going to end.

Relaxation Techniques

There are several relaxation techniques you can use to help control your anxiety and fear. The most basic technique is based on breathing while more advanced methods include meditation. It doesn’t make sense now, but your anxiety amplifies your fear, which leads to irrational actions. Make an effort to learn about relaxation techniques that will help when you are in a fearful situation, because you will win half the battle this way.

Practice this Combination

Last but not least, practice this combination of exposure and relaxation as often as possible. The point is to establish the confidence that you are in control, not your fear. It’s all about moving past your assumptions and finding out what really happens, because the moment you prove your assumptions wrong it’s another boost in your confidence. Relaxation techniques can be practiced anywhere and arranging for exposure shouldn’t be too difficult, especially if you have somebody to provide support.

Some Final Thoughts

There is nothing wrong with seeking professional help in cases where irrational fear is the culprit. But keep in mind that if you are able to tackle the problem by yourself it will be much more effective. Also, never limit yourself to certain techniques or steps. In fact, use as many helpful aids as possible if you feel they are necessary.

What are your irrational fears? Are you working towards overcoming them? What techniques do you use?

    1. Thanks Carrie!! You should have seen me at the State Fair riding on the air lift! It was my 2nd time and my poor teen was designated to ride with me both times. So far I only make it one way but hopefully one day I’ll be able to make a round trip! We definitely need to face our fears in order to conquer them.
